All member states of the European Union have a Permanent Representation to the EU and their mission is to represent their respective countries at the European institutions and to defend their national interests and positions. Coreper’s new role in association with the European Council has also had an impact on the formal relationship between the representatives and their home governments. Predictably, there has formed a more direct linkage between the representatives in Brussels and the center of the home government, thus bypassing the usual communication chain through the foreign ministry.
